Unplug to Find an Outlet
"In a world where we are almost always connected to the internet, on the phone, or watching TV, I have found it extremely important to find ways to unplug--it has become an essential part in my happiness and health while at school. Initially, unplugging was very difficult because it was what I knew best. All of my work was on the computer--word documents, google calendars, emails, and research articles flooded my life. I had a hard time getting away from work. At the end of my first semester at Concordia, I hit a breaking point. I won't go into details, but it was clear that I needed to find an outlet. That's when I started becoming more involved in the activities that I had grown up around. I became more active in a church, became a more active volunteer, and developed stronger relationships with students and faculty. These new experiences taught me a lot about myself. Not only did I learn that I need to slow down in life, but I also learned that I love serving others and building meaningful relationships with others. My life has changed a lot since I learned to unplug. While I am still very dedicated to school and my job, I also make it a point to do something I love everyday. Now, I enjoy volunteering, reading, and swimming laps at the local YMCA. It's amazing what you will do when you unplug."
