What Did You Want to Do/Be When You Grew Up?
The idea: Recapture childhood aspirations to relocate your passions, talents, aspirations.
Time needed: 10-20+ minutes
Resources needed: 1 handout per person (or pen and paper)
Resources below: Documents below include handout and instruction sheet for facilitating the experience with a group.
Suitable for: Any size group (1-100)
Further exploration: Parker Palmer's Let Your Life Speak (Chapter 2, "Now I Become Myself")
Instructions: Remember back to when you were more imaginative, less hemmed in by practicality and deadlines. For most of us, we'll be remembering childhood. Go back as far as you can and then write a list of the top 10 things you wanted to do/be when you grew up. Keep the answers that were most true back then. Don't worry about whether or not these dreams were even possible. Your list might include jobs (i.e. firefighter), roles (i.e. grandparent), activities (i.e. reader) or even characters (i.e. Jedi knight). Don't judge. Write your list.
After you've written your list, consider what is current. Are there aspirations, talents or values that are still true to you today? Consider what's been lost. Have you misplaced something important as you've "grown up."
